Download our free moving checklist for a more detailed timeline of what you need to do at each stage, but below is a high level overview of how the move process works and some tips that will help you along the way.
Choose a moving company (or if you are going to do this on your own, really understand how much you will save as there are many hidden costs and risks when moving on your own). A moving company can help with all aspects of your move and keep you on track. They do this for a living – so trust the experts to ensure you have a seamless transition!
Get prepared. Anything you can sell or donate or dispose of prior to moving day will make the move easier. There are many non-profit organizations that will come to your home to pickup donated furniture and personal belongings, so look for local options in your area. Reduce your on-hand food, specifically any refrigerated items, so you have less waste on moving day.
Contact utility, service contracts, post office, insurances, memberships, doctors offices, delivery services, and family / friends. Provide them with your new address and move date, so you aren’t left paying for things after you’ve moved you no longer need.
Mark or color code boxes and items, so you know which rooms they go in when you arrive at your new home. This will save a ton of time in the unpacking phase! Leave your clothes on hangers and group by drawer. Remember to keep out a duffle bag of essential clothes and hygiene products so move-in day isn’t a scramble. Take pictures of how your current setup looks, so you know how you want things set back up.
Move-in-day – plan for a sitter for the family animals and small children. Remember to leave any relevant paperwork (appliance manuals, receipts, etc.) for the new owners, as well as keys / garage door openers prior to saying good-bye to your residence. Keep a cooler handy for the food items you will take with you, as well as cash / new house keys. Rely on your moving company to ensure you have everything setup and complete! Start unpacking the kitchen and bathrooms, as those are a priority. Bedrooms can be done the day after, especially if you already have a duffle bag of clothes handy.
Celebrate – Moves are a big step in life. Don’t try to do it all in 1 day. Remember to rest as you are working and know that soon, you will be all settled in your new digs! Enjoy the moment and don’t ruin your new moment by trying to tackle more than you can manage.
